What Robert Redford Quietly Did Before Filming His Most Famous Romantic Scene

Robert Redford did not want the part.

When Columbia Pictures began casting the 1973 romantic classic The Way We Were, director Sydney Pollack spent eight agonizing months begging his longtime friend to play heartthrob Hubbell Gardiner opposite Barbra Streisand.

Redford repeatedly pushed back. He feared Streisand would dominate the production, worryingly asking if she was “going to sing in the middle of the movie.”

When Opposites Collided on Camera
The hesitation went deeper than schedules or salaries.

Redford viewed Streisand as an overwhelming force of nature from musical theater. He feared her character, the passionate Marxist activist Katie Morosky, would render his role a flat, golden-boy prop.

Streisand, conversely, was captivated by Redford’s quiet depth. She personally pressured Pollack and studio head Ray Stark to offer whatever Redford required.

The studio eventually sweetened the pot, offering Redford an unprecedented $1.2 million—surpassing Streisand’s own salary—and rewriting the script in Sun Valley, Idaho, to elevate Hubbell into an intellectual equal.

Yet, when production finally began, their clash in creative philosophies created immediate friction.

Guarding Boundaries Under the Studio Lights
Streisand craved intense preparation. She repeatedly begged Pollack for pre-production sit-downs to dissect characters, analyze motivations, and build intimacy.

Redford completely refused.

He believed romantic tension lived entirely in spontaneous first takes. “Bob preferred the strangeness that contributes to chemistry,” Pollack later explained to crew members.

When filming their first bedroom scene, Redford guarded his boundaries literally and figuratively. According to Robert Hofler’s detailed behind-the-scenes history The Way They Were, Redford wore two athletic supporters under the sheets, while Streisand wore a bikini.

Redford also drew the line at dialogue he felt insulted his masculinity. In the film’s second intimate scene, the script called for Hubbell to whisper, “It will be better this time.” Redford flatly refused to say the line, forcing Pollack to drop it entirely.

What We Know
Eight Months of Resistance: Redford turned down the project multiple times, signing on only after major script revisions and a record-setting payday.

Method Mismatch: Streisand demanded endless rehearsals; Redford gave his peak energy on take one and rarely went past take three.

Off-Screen Respect: Despite tabloid gossip claiming an off-screen romance, both stars maintained strict, platonic boundaries throughout filming.

An Unbroken Bond: In her 2023 memoir, Streisand revealed Redford called her during the film’s 50th-anniversary restoration, telling her, “I love you dearly, and I always will.”

Why This Matters
Hollywood today relies heavily on CGI, manufactured franchises, and algorithmically engineered celebrity couplings. The Way We Were succeeded because its electric spark came from genuine, unresolved tension between two completely different human beings.

Audiences recognized that Katie and Hubbell were fighting to bridge an impossible divide—because, behind the lenses, Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford were doing the exact same thing.

Their tension created one of cinema’s most enduring love stories, proving that true chemistry rarely comes from comfort; it comes from friction.

As Redford once observed of their dynamic: Streisand’s femininity brought out a man’s vulnerability, while her strength commanded absolute respect.
