Skopje, North Macedonia – In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked communities worldwide, two children in Brazil have died after consuming poisoned Easter eggs allegedly sent by a woman seeking revenge on her ex-boyfriend’s new family.
A Joyful Gift Turns Deadly
On April 16, 2025, Mirian Lira, a 32-year-old mother from Imperatriz, Brazil, received a package containing chocolate Easter eggs accompanied by a note reading, “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.” Unaware of the danger, Mirian shared the treats with her two children, Luis, 7, and Evelyn, 13.
Shortly after consuming the chocolates, Luis became severely ill and was found unresponsive. Despite his father’s attempts at CPR and immediate hospitalization, Luis succumbed to cardiac arrest on April 17.
Mirian and Evelyn also began exhibiting symptoms of poisoning, including difficulty breathing and discoloration of their hands. Evelyn’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she passed away on April 21 due to vascular shock caused by multiple organ failure. Mirian remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Investigation and Arrest
Authorities have arrested 35-year-old Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, the ex-partner of Rafael Silva, who is the father of Luis and Evelyn. Surveillance footage captured Barbosa purchasing the chocolates while disguised in a wig. Police also recovered additional evidence, including wigs, chocolates, and bus tickets, linking her to the crime.
Barbosa admitted to buying the chocolates but denies poisoning them. Investigators believe jealousy and revenge motivated the act, as Barbosa was reportedly upset about Silva’s new relationship with Mirian.
The Maranhão Civil Police continue to investigate, aiming to gather sufficient evidence to prosecute Barbosa for this heinous crime.
