Swapping Shores for Ship Life: California Grandma Embarks on Lifelong Sea Voyage

Sharon Lane, all smiles as she trades California sunsets for endless ocean horizons aboard Villa Vie Odyssey.

Forget shuffleboard and early bird specials. Sharon Lane, a spirited 74-year-old retiree from California, just made the ultimate lifestyle pivot: she’s sold her worldly possessions and moved onto a cruise ship – permanently. Her new address? The Villa Vie Odyssey, embarking on an unprecedented 15-year continuous voyage around the globe.
The MV Villa Vie Odyssey: Sharon Lane’s new floating home for the next decade and a half.

“I didn’t just pack a suitcase; I packed up my life,” Sharon laughs, her voice crackling with excitement over the ship’s satellite connection. “The grandkids think Nana’s gone completely bonkers, but honestly? This feels like the adventure I’ve been waiting for my entire life.” Her journey began with a leap of faith after reading about Villa Vie Residences’ ambitious plan – a cruise designed to circumnavigate the globe multiple times over 15 years, visiting over 425 ports across 147 countries.
Out with the old: Selling her California home was step one in Sharon’s extraordinary seafaring journey.

The logistics weren’t for the faint of heart. Sharon meticulously downsized, selling her home and most belongings. “You realize how much stuff you accumulate,” she muses. “Letting go was surprisingly freeing. What I truly value fits nicely into my cabin.” That cabin is her new sanctuary aboard the recently refurbished Odyssey, offering the essentials and a priceless view: the ever-changing seascape.

Financially, the math made waves. Sharon opted for Villa Vie’s “Essential” package, requiring a significant upfront investment (reportedly starting around $99,000 for a 15-year lease for an interior cabin, plus monthly fees around $2,500 covering food, basic drinks, wifi, and port fees). “Break it down monthly, including dining, entertainment, and even my utilities? It’s comparable to a nice retirement community,” Sharon explains. “But instead of one dining hall view, I get the Pyramids, the Great Barrier Reef, and the fjords of Norway from my ‘backyard’.”

Life aboard the Odyssey is anything but sedentary. Sharon describes days filled with enrichment lectures on upcoming destinations, cooking classes featuring regional cuisines, movie nights under the stars, and forging instant bonds with fellow “lifers.” “We’re a unique tribe,” she says. “People from all walks of life, united by this wild dream of seeing it all. I’ve found my people – my sea-loving soulmates.”

The Odyssey set sail from Southampton, UK, in May 2025. Its first major leg traverses the British Isles and Europe before heading towards South America and Antarctica later this year. Sharon’s personal bucket list over the coming years includes witnessing the Northern Lights in Norway, exploring ancient markets in Istanbul, and experiencing a safari in South Africa – all without ever needing to repack her suitcase for a flight home.

“It’s not about running away from life,” Sharon reflects, gazing out at the vast ocean. “It’s about running towards it with open arms. This ship isn’t just transportation; it’s my community, my adventure club, and my home. Landlubbers might not get it, but out here? I feel more alive than I have in decades. The whole world is literally outside my door, and I plan to savor every single wave, every single sunrise, every single port.”
