Prince William Opens Up About Discussing Kate’s Cancer Journey with Their Children

Kate Middleton entered remission this past January after her cancer diagnosis. The entire Wales family endured an incredibly challenging period, yet little has been shared publicly about how Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis coped during their mother’s treatment—that is, until Prince William recently broke his silence on the matter.
Back in March 2024, just weeks after King Charles revealed his own cancer diagnosis, Kate Middleton made her own emotional announcement. Standing in Windsor Gardens, she recorded a deeply personal video message.
“I want to personally thank everyone for the overwhelming messages of support and understanding during my recovery from surgery,” Kate expressed. “These past few months have been extraordinarily difficult for all of us, though I’m incredibly thankful for the exceptional medical care I’ve received.”
She went on to acknowledge the profound impact on her family: “This news shocked us completely. William and I knew we needed to handle this as privately as possible, especially for our children’s sake.”
Kate emphasized the careful consideration they gave to telling their kids: “This couldn’t be rushed. I needed time to heal from major surgery before beginning treatment. More importantly, we needed to find the right way to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis—in terms they could understand—while assuring them I’d be alright.”
“I’ve been honest with them about being well and growing stronger each day,” Kate continued. “I’m focusing on healing myself mentally, physically, and emotionally. Having William’s unwavering support has been invaluable, as has the incredible kindness you’ve all shown us.”
During her treatment, Kate stepped away from public duties to focus entirely on recovery. William shouldered additional responsibilities, balancing his royal obligations with being present as both husband and father.
When Kate announced her remission in January, it brought tremendous relief to the family. Since her diagnosis, the Wales family has maintained a low profile, keeping details about how the children managed this difficult period largely private.
That changed recently when William appeared on Brazilian television during his Earthshot Prize environmental initiative trip. He candidly discussed the “tough conversations” he and Kate navigated with their children about their mother’s condition.
William revealed that their three children asked countless questions about Kate’s health, prompting him and Kate to choose radical honesty as their approach.
“Every family faces hardships and must work through them together,” William shared with The Sun. “What matters most is how you handle those moments. We chose complete transparency with our children—sharing both positive and difficult truths. We help them understand why things happen and why they might feel certain emotions.”
He added thoughtfully, “Sometimes there simply aren’t answers to every question—I believe that’s something all parents experience.”
