Michigan Teen Suffers Spinal Fractures After Controversial Football Tackle

A high school football game in Michigan turned into a nightmare after 15-year-old Colton Mims suffered two spinal fractures when he was brought down by a much larger opponent in what many are calling a “deliberate” and dangerous hit.

A routine play gone wrong

The incident occurred during a junior varsity matchup between Lakeshore and Kalamazoo Central. A viral video shows a Lakeshore player tackling Mims before driving his full weight onto the smaller teen—twice. Gasps filled the stadium as Colton lay injured on the field.

His mother, Courtney Mims, rushed down from the stands.
“As soon as I realized it was my son, I couldn’t be stopped,” she told WSBT. “I’ve never been so shaken in my life.”

Colton was immediately transported to the hospital, where doctors confirmed fractures in his spine. He has been prescribed muscle relaxers and will undergo continuous evaluation to determine whether he can ever safely return to football.

A mother’s fear and frustration

Courtney says her son is sidelined for the rest of the season—and possibly for good.
“He can barely walk right now. He’s only 15. Football is his whole world, and for someone to try to take that away from him is just awful,” she said.

She told MLive that the hit was not only reckless but “unacceptable.”
“My kid could have been paralyzed. I don’t know if he’ll ever play again.”

Outrage in the community

Video of the play, first shared on Facebook by family friend Gretta Volkenstein, has fueled outrage among parents, students, and fans.
“It was so purposeful and impulsive,” Volkenstein said. “One split-second decision can change somebody’s entire life. Kids have to be taught accountability.”

Support for Colton quickly spread through the Kalamazoo Central community. The school’s varsity team dedicated its 26–7 victory the next night to the injured player.
“The win was for Colton,” a Facebook post read.

Schools and officials respond

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) confirmed it is monitoring the case but said both schools are handling the matter internally.
“We’ve spoken with both schools, and they are resolving this issue,” a spokesperson said.

Lakeshore officials echoed that statement, declining to share details but noting they were in contact with Kalamazoo Central.

On Monday, it was confirmed that the player responsible will face punishment, though neither district disclosed specifics. According to Colton’s mother, the opposing athlete is expected to miss several games.

Social media backlash
The video’s circulation has sparked an outpouring of anger online.
“The offending player should be suspended from school and the coaches investigated,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “That was a criminal-level attack. Even in the NFL it would’ve drawn penalties.”

Looking ahead
As Colton begins his recovery, his family remains focused on his health and future. His mother fears long-term complications.
“Any accident years from now—even something as small as a slip and fall—could risk paralysis,” she said.

For now, the community continues to rally behind the teenager, while the debate over accountability and safety in high school sports grows louder.
