Judge Reverses Decision to Release Teen Accused of Brutal Murdering Stepsister on Cruise

MIAMI — A luxury Caribbean cruise turned into a nightmare of unimaginable proportions when an 18-year-old cheerleader was found dead, concealed beneath the bed of the cabin she shared with her stepbrother. Now, new details revealed in federal court are shedding light on a case that has left even seasoned officials shaken.

Anna Marie Kepner, a high school senior from Titusville, Florida, was traveling aboard the Carnival Horizon with her family in November 2025 when she vanished. Days later, a cabin steward discovered her body wrapped in a blanket and hidden under life vests.

The suspect, her 16-year-old stepbrother, Timothy Hudson, is currently facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. While he maintains his innocence, the legal proceedings have taken a dark turn, with a federal judge recently ordering the teen to be detained after citing “signs of psychopathy” and a “lack of remorse.”

A Judge’s Grave Concern
The case has been marked by a fierce tug-of-war over whether the defendant should be held in custody while awaiting trial. Initially, U.S. Magistrate Judge Edwin G. Torres allowed Hudson to remain under supervised release, citing concerns about finding an appropriate facility for his age.

That decision was dramatically reversed on June 10. After reviewing overwhelming evidence—including DNA linking him to the scene—Judge Torres signaled that the teenager’s actions displayed a “level of depravity” that he could not ignore.

“The government’s evidence is exceptionally strong,” the judge noted, expressing profound fear that the defendant poses an ongoing danger to the community. Prosecutors have characterized the killing as a “deliberate and barbaric” act, alleging that the young girl’s life was stolen in a senseless, violent attack.

What We Know
The Incident: Anna Marie Kepner was reported dead on November 7, 2025, after being found in a shared cabin on the Carnival Horizon.

The Charges: Timothy Hudson faces counts of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse.

Legal Status: He is being prosecuted as an adult in federal court.

Evidence: Authorities report surveillance footage shows Hudson entering and leaving the room repeatedly in the hours surrounding the discovery of the body.

Prior Warnings: Testimony revealed the victim had allegedly expressed fear of her stepbrother due to his behavior, including an incident where she felt uneasy about his presence in her room.

A Family and a Nation Reeling
The tragedy has ignited a national conversation about the safety of young people on cruise ships and the responsibilities of family members when traveling together. For the Kepner family, the devastation is total. Anna’s father has publicly demanded justice, stating he wants his daughter’s alleged killer to face the full consequences of the law.

Conversely, some family members have pointed to the logistical failures of the trip, questioning the wisdom of placing teenagers in the same cabin without adequate supervision. Yet, for many, the focus remains on the chilling nature of the allegations—that a sibling could allegedly commit such a crime and then reportedly force a younger child to sleep in the same room as the victim’s body.

As the court prepares for jury selection, scheduled to begin this September, the community is left to grapple with the disturbing details emerging from the investigation.

For now, Timothy Hudson remains in custody, awaiting a trial that will test the justice system’s ability to handle a crime that has horrified even those tasked with hearing the evidence. Whether justice can provide any measure of closure to a family ripped apart remains the haunting question as this case heads to court.
