During the brief encounter, the visibly frail Pope, seated in a wheelchair, greeted Vance, a Catholic convert, with a gentle handshake. The Vice President expressed his well-wishes, saying, “I know you’ve not been feeling great, but it’s good to see you in better health.”
As the meeting concluded, Vance offered a heartfelt farewell: “I pray for you every day. God bless you.”
The Pope’s final day was marked by continued dedication to his duties, including delivering the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing to the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
Following the Pope’s death on April 21, Vice President Vance shared his condolences on social media, reflecting on the pontiff’s impactful homily during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, describing it as “really quite beautiful.”
