Pramod Poudel answered an early-morning phone call from his newlywed wife, completely unaware it would be the last time he heard her voice.
Hours later, an avalanche of water, ice, and mountain debris obliterated her village.
Sumitra, 25, stayed in the village of Sole following the couple’s June wedding while Pramod returned to the United Kingdom for work. When they connected at 4:15 a.m., she shared a routine, tender check-in.
“When I last spoke to her, she said to me, ‘How are you? I love you so much,’” Poudel told reporters.
A Wall of Mountain Water Hits
The disaster struck without warning along the Nepal-Tibet border.
A massive glacial collapse triggered an inland surge that the U.S. Geological Survey initially registered as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. The debris flow tore down the valley, moving nearly 14 miles in less than seven minutes, according to CNN.
The wall of water wiped out roughly 90% of the village of Sole.
Roads shattered, bridges collapsed, and power grids went dark across the mountain corridor. Along with Sumitra, Poudel’s 52-year-old mother Tulisa, his 31-year-old brother Pardip, and his 64-year-old uncle Madhav all vanished in the surge.
Racing Against the Clock
Poudel immediately boarded a flight back to Nepal, desperate to reach the valley where his family lived.
“Nobody knows what happened,” Poudel said to the BBC. “All the bridges are broken, so you can’t cross the land. There’s no power, no electricity, so I can’t contact anyone.”
Emergency crews and telecom operators have attempted to track last-known cellular signals across the region, according to The Kathmandu Post. However, mudslides and severed roads have made physical access near impossible for heavy rescue equipment.
