“You know what, honey?” I said, pasting a bright smile on my face. “I understand. I really do. But there’s something you forgot. One very important detail. Please look to your right.”
Ryan turned his head, and the arrogant smirk instantly vanished, replaced by sheer panic.
Standing just a few feet away, holding a bouquet of “Welcome Home” balloons, were Ryan’s parents. I had secretly flown them out with me to be part of the big surprise. They had heard every single word he just said.
His mother’s face was red with fury, while his father looked at him with absolute disgust. “Male nature?” his father boomed, dropping the balloons to the concrete. “You arrogant, cowardly fool. Is that how I raised you to treat your family?”
Before Ryan could even stammer out an excuse, his mother stepped forward. She didn’t yell. She just looked at the mistress, who was suddenly trying to inch away, and then back at Ryan. “Don’t bother coming home to our house. In fact, don’t bother calling us until you figure out how to be a man.”
But I wasn’t finished.
“Oh, and Ryan?” I added, my voice steady. “Since you’re so comfortable with ‘male nature’ and being a free, attractive guy, you’ll be thrilled to know I already spoke to my lawyer when I saw your suspicious credit card charges a month ago. I just came here to confirm it.”
I handed him an envelope I had tucked into the baby bag. Inside were the divorce papers I had been holding onto just in case my gut feeling was right.
“You can have your freedom,” I said, turning away with our beautiful daughters safely in my arms. “But you’re going to be paying for these girls for the next eighteen years.”
I walked away alongside his fiercely supportive parents, leaving Ryan standing alone on the dock with his ruined reputation, a furious family, and a mistress who was already calling a cab to leave him behind.
