A Teen Was Sent Home With Laxatives for Constipation—He Died 24 Hours Later

The scene at the hospital was supposed to be the start of relief. Seventeen-year-old Jack Dunn, plagued by abdominal pain so severe he could barely stand, arrived at the emergency department desperate for answers. He left with a bottle of laxatives and a diagnosis of common constipation.

He never woke up again.

Just 24 hours after being sent home by medical staff, the Porth, Wales, teenager was found dead in his bed by his father, Kieron. What doctors dismissed as a routine digestive issue was, in reality, a racing, silent killer that had been ignored during his hospital visit.

A Fatal Miscalculation
According to his grieving family, Jack had been subjected to a bladder scan to rule out appendicitis, but the results were inconclusive. When he struggled to breathe in the hospital, medical staff reportedly attributed the behavior to anxiety, believing the teen was simply overwhelmed by the environment.

“We took him to A&E and completely trusted the doctors,” Kieron Dunn told The Sun. “The doctor said he was baffled and believed Jack was suffering from nothing more than a bad bout of constipation.”

Tragically, that diagnosis was fundamentally wrong. Jack was not suffering from a digestive blockage, but from undiagnosed Type 1 Diabetes that had progressed into Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).

What We Know
The Symptoms: Jack experienced severe abdominal pain, difficulty walking, and rapid, labored breathing.

The Misdiagnosis: Hospital staff initially diagnosed him with simple constipation and prescribed laxatives.

The Reality: The teenager was in the late stages of ketoacidosis, a state where the body produces dangerous levels of blood acids (ketones) because it lacks enough insulin to break down sugar.

The Timeline: Jack was discharged from the hospital after his initial assessment and was found deceased in his home just one day later.

Why This Matters
This tragedy highlights a terrifying reality in emergency medicine: “masking.” Diabetic Ketoacidosis often presents with symptoms that can easily be confused with more benign conditions, including severe stomach pain, nausea, and rapid breathing.

For parents, this case serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of advocating for deeper testing. When a loved one’s pain doesn’t align with a “routine” diagnosis, health experts emphasize that symptoms like unquenchable thirst, extreme fatigue, or unexplained shortness of breath—when combined with abdominal distress—warrant immediate blood glucose testing, a simple and inexpensive procedure that could potentially save a life.

For the Dunn family, the realization of what was missed is a burden they carry every day. As Kieron Dunn noted, his son’s death was almost certainly preventable had the right test been performed in time.

“Finding my son dead in his bed was the worst moment of my life,” Kieron said. “I believe Jack would be alive today if a few more simple tests had been carried out.”
