A New Jersey woman spotted a massive snake in her yard—then X-rays revealed its stomach contents

Leslie Daley was simply watering her garden flowers when a flash of bright yellow caught her eye. Seconds later, she realized she was staring at an eight-foot python slithering straight toward her backyard shed.

The shocking encounter unfolded in quiet Freehold Township, New Jersey. The homeowner watched in disbelief as the massive reptile disappeared beneath the floorboards of her family’s wooden shed.

Leslie and her husband Edward immediately called animal control officers for assistance. Responders from the Monmouth County SPCA arrived at the home shortly after.

However, extracting the forty-pound giant was no simple task. The python had wedged itself tightly beneath the heavy wooden floorboards.

“Due to the size of him, unfortunately we couldn’t just pull him back out,” Animal Control Officer Scott Crawford explained to reporters.

Officials called in a local contractor to dismantle the shed floorboards. Working with extreme care, officers gently unwound the juvenile Burmese python without injuring the animal.

Rescuers immediately noticed a massive, alarming bulge in the middle of the snake’s body. The swelling led officers to suspect the predator had recently eaten a substantial meal.

What The X-Rays Revealed
Rescuers transported the eight-foot snake directly to the Monmouth County SPCA veterinary clinic. Medical staff quickly performed abdominal X-rays to investigate the mysterious lump.

The diagnostic imaging revealed a startling sight. The Burmese python had recently swallowed a whole, adult opossum.

Dr. Samantha Mammen, medical director at the SPCA, evaluated the reptile following the scan. She confirmed the juvenile python was surprisingly healthy, well-hydrated, and uninjured.

Experts noted that Burmese pythons swallow their prey whole using flexible jaws. The python’s full stomach likely kept it docile, preventing any aggression toward the homeowners.

A Growing Problem In The Suburbs
Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia and require warm tropical climates. Officials believe an owner illegally dumped the exotic reptile after it grew too large to manage.

“We suspect they dumped him out,” Officer Crawford told local news outlets. He noted that several residents keep exotic reptiles in the region without proper state permits.

While the python survived the summer heat, medical staff warned it would have died during the cold New Jersey winter. Officials safely transferred the snake to a licensed reptile handler for permanent care.

What We Know
Leslie Daley spotted the eight-foot yellow Burmese python while watering flowers in Freehold Township, New Jersey.

Animal control officers and a contractor dismantled shed floorboards to safely extract the forty-pound reptile.

Veterinary X-rays confirmed the python’s swollen belly contained a whole, recently swallowed opossum.

SPCA medical staff confirmed the python was a healthy, well-nourished juvenile.

Authorities suspect an unknown owner illegally abandoned the python after it grew too large.

The python now resides in a secure facility with a certified reptile specialist.

Why This Matters
This alarming discovery highlights a growing safety issue across American suburban neighborhoods. Irresponsible owners frequently buy exotic pets without understanding their rapid growth rates and complex care requirements.

When these creatures become unmanageable, owners sometimes release them into local ecosystems. Abandoned exotic pets pose immediate hazards to local wildlife, outdoor domestic pets, and unsuspecting neighbors.

Invasive constrictors can decimate native animal populations while facing starvation or freezing once winter arrives. Wildlife authorities stress that releasing exotic animals into suburban neighborhoods remains illegal and highly dangerous.

“Exotic pets do not belong in the wild,” the Monmouth County SPCA warned in an official statement. “If you can no longer care for a reptile, please reach out to a local rescue or shelter instead.”
