The darkest morning of Rachel Marsland’s life began like any other – until the horrifying silence beside her shattered everything. The 36-year-old mother woke in her Hyde home to discover her vibrant daughter, Lila, just weeks from her sixth birthday, lying utterly still and unresponsive next to her.
Panic surged as Rachel realized Lila wasn’t breathing. She immediately dialed for emergency help. Paramedics raced to the scene, but their desperate efforts were in vain. Tragically, they confirmed the little girl had passed away several hours before they arrived. There was nothing anyone could do.
Consumed by grief and confusion, Rachel spoke of the unbearable void left by unanswered questions. “I woke up, and she was gone, right beside me,” she shared with the Manchester Evening News, her voice echoing a profound despair. “I called the ambulance straight away, but… they told me she’d been gone for hours. They tried CPR, they got there so fast, but it was already too late. It’s beyond horrendous. Even now, I can’t make myself believe it’s real.”
Lila was remembered as a ray of sunshine. She attended Flowery Field Primary School, where her kindness was legendary. Her mother painted a picture of a little girl whose bright red hair was matched only by her effervescent spirit. “She had such a big heart for everyone,” Rachel recalled. “Dropping her off or picking her up from school took ages because she had to hug every single teacher. It would easily take her half an hour just to say goodbye.”
Described as “the nicest child ever,” Lila was adored by her many friends. The lack of understanding surrounding her death compounded the family’s agony. “Not knowing why… it freezes the grief somehow,” Rachel confessed. “How can we properly mourn when we don’t even know how she died?”
A month after Lila’s sudden passing on December 28, 2023, her community gathered to say a heartbreaking farewell. Her funeral saw the church filled to capacity, with her entire primary school present. “It was a beautiful send-off for her,” Rachel said, finding a small solace in the outpouring of love. “We had a horse and carriage. It was packed, absolutely packed – the whole school came. It felt like the perfect day, just for her.”
The search for answers continues. An inquest into Lila’s death opened at Stockport Coroners Court in October 2024. Troubling details surfaced during a pre-inquest review, reported by the Manchester Evening News. Shockingly, the original copies of Lila’s medical notes from the weeks preceding her death had been ‘misplaced.’
The court learned of a potentially missing record: an assessment scheduled for 6:35 PM on October 8, 2023, showed no corresponding entry in the documents provided. Other entries indicated Lila had been prescribed paracetamol around that time, suggesting she was seen by a clinician senior enough to authorize medication, though she apparently never received it.
Area Coroner Chris Morris emphasized the gravity of the situation, demanding the misplaced original notes be found, calling it a “serious matter.” Legal representatives stated a copy existed, taken before the originals vanished, which they believed constituted a complete record.
Given the complex circumstances, Coroner Morris made the significant decision that the inquest will be heard by a jury. He allocated an unusually lengthy eight days for the proceedings, underscoring the complexity and importance of uncovering the truth behind this devastating loss.
