The John Harbaugh era could hardly have started better.

In his first game on the New York Giants sideline, Harbaugh watched his new team defeat the Dallas Cowboys 28–20 in front of a charged MetLife Stadium crowd.

And the win did more than put one victory in the standings.

It gave Giants fans an immediate glimpse of what Harbaugh’s arrival could mean for a franchise that has endured years of frustration.

The Giants looked like the team in control

New York never trailed.

Quarterback Jaxson Dart looked composed throughout the night, completing 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 54 yards on the ground.

Isaiah Likely became one of his favorite targets.

The tight end caught all eight passes thrown his way for 78 yards and two touchdowns. Cam Skattebo also contributed 81 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Most importantly, New York repeatedly kept Dallas from getting comfortable.

The Giants possessed the ball for more than 36 minutes, forcing the Cowboys to spend much of the night chasing the game.

For Harbaugh, that kind of discipline was exactly what the Giants wanted when they hired him.

Dallas found the same old problem

The Cowboys entered the season with enormous expectations surrounding a revamped defense.

Instead, that unit immediately struggled.

Dallas allowed New York to convert nine of 11 third downs, according to the Cowboys’ official postgame report. The defense also missed seven tackles, while Dart and the Giants’ rushing attack consistently found room.

Quinnen Williams did not try to hide the problem afterward.

He pointed directly toward third-down failures and said the defense needed to be critical of its preparation and execution.

Rookie Caleb Downs delivered a similar message after his first NFL game.

He acknowledged that the Cowboys simply needed to do their jobs better, rather than allowing the loss to linger.

That response matters because Dallas invested heavily in changing its defense during the offseason.

Sunday night showed that new personnel and a new scheme do not automatically produce immediate results.

The moment that changed everything

Dallas had opportunities.

Dak Prescott finished with 175 passing yards and two touchdowns. Javonte Williams scored twice, including a fourth-quarter touchdown that brought the Cowboys within eight points.

But Dallas never completed the comeback.

Earlier, Prescott threw an interception that Jevón Holland turned into a major momentum swing. Later, a taunting penalty after Williams’ touchdown pushed Dallas’ extra point attempt farther back, and the kick went wide.

Then the Giants took control again.

New York’s final possession consumed the final 5:16 of the game.

Dallas never got another chance.

Why This Matters

For New York, this was more than an opening-night win over a division rival.

The Giants entered the season with a new head coach and a renewed expectation that the franchise could finally move beyond its recent struggles. Harbaugh arrived with a Super Bowl title and 18 seasons of experience as Baltimore’s head coach.

Jerry Jones had already warned that Harbaugh could make life difficult for Dallas.

Before the game, Jones called him an “outstanding coach” and admitted he immediately worried about having to face him twice every season.

After one game, that concern already looks understandable.

The Giants played with control, physicality and composure. The Cowboys spent much of the night trying to recover.

One game cannot determine an entire season.

But for New York, the message was unmistakable: the Harbaugh era has arrived, and it started by taking down Dallas.
