Jennifer Lopez posted her premiere photos. Then the unedited ones showed up — and the internet couldn’t stop comparing the two.

The 56-year-old actress and singer walked the red carpet Tuesday, May 26, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood for the world premiere of her new Netflix rom-com, “Office Romance.” She wore a black Versace gown, her hair long and straight, her makeup a smoky bronze. This isn’t the first time Lopez has faced filter accusations. Fans have flagged suspected editing in her posts before, including a widely mocked holiday selfie where a background object appeared warped. The premiere photos reignited a debate that follows her regularly: how much of what audiences see from A-list stars online is real.

Lopez has addressed the underlying question directly before. In 2021, responding to a fan who accused her of getting Botox, she wrote, “LOL thats just my face!!! For the 500 millionth time… I have never done Botox or any injectable or surgery!!” She’s said cosmetic procedures simply aren’t “my thing,” while crediting skincare, including hyaluronic acid treatments, for her appearance.

She’s also spoken about aging itself with unusual candor for Hollywood. In a 2017 interview with W Magazine, she said confidence flips with age — men grow more insecure, women grow into themselves. “I never appreciated my body or my looks when I was in my 20s,” she said. “Now I’m like, Look at me!… And it’s not about perfection. I like the scars that I have.”

The gap between Lopez’s Instagram and the unfiltered photos taps into something bigger than one celebrity’s selfie habits. It’s the same tension driving conversations across social media: the pressure on women — especially women over 50 in the public eye — to look flawless, even as they publicly preach self-acceptance. Lopez has built part of her brand on owning her age. The moment her online image looked airbrushed beyond recognition, that message collided with the reality fans could see for themselves.

The Bigger Picture

The controversy comes as Lopez promotes “Office Romance,” out on Netflix June 5, in which she plays an airline CEO who falls for the company’s new lawyer, played by Goldstein. Speaking to People about her co-star, Lopez said she was surprised by his warmth off-screen: “I expected more of a rough guy, but you get this kind, gentle but also very smart person.” She’s also said Goldstein wrote the film specifically with her in mind, telling her it wouldn’t move forward without her.

For now, Lopez hasn’t addressed the filter accusations directly. The unedited photos are still circulating — and so is the question they raised.
