Tragedy Strikes UW-Platteville: Two Graduates Lost in Dormitory Incident

The University of Wisconsin–Platteville community is reeling after a devastating event unfolded on May 19, 2025. Two recent graduates, both 22 years old, were found deceased in a campus residence hall in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide.

The incident occurred at Wilgus Hall, a student dormitory, where campus police responded to reports of a disturbance around 4 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Kelsie Martin and Hallie Helms with gunshot wounds. Martin, a psychology major from Beloit, Wisconsin, and the hall’s Assistant Resident Director, was transported to Southwest Health and subsequently airlifted to UW Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Helms, an elementary education major from Baraboo, Wisconsin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary autopsy reports indicate that Martin died from a gunshot wound, while Helms’ fatal injury was self-inflicted. Authorities believe the incident was targeted and isolated, with no other individuals involved.

Both students had participated in the university’s commencement ceremony just two days prior, marking the culmination of their academic journeys. In response to the tragedy, the university canceled final exams for the week and has made counseling services available to students, faculty, and staff.

Chancellor Tammy Evetovich expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We are overwhelmed by your kindness. We are a close community, and this outpouring of care is a powerful reminder of who we are. We do not take it for granted.”

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers also acknowledged the tragedy, posting on social media: “I’ve been briefed on the situation at UW-Platteville, and we will continue to remain in close contact with university officials. As we await more information, please keep UW-Platteville students, faculty, staff, and the greater Platteville community in your thoughts.”

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing as the university community seeks to heal from this profound loss.
