Stronger in the Broken Places’: Joe Biden Addresses Nation After Aggressive Cancer Diagnosis

Former U.S. president Joe Biden, 82, has confirmed that doctors discovered an advanced, fast-growing prostate cancer that has already spread to his bones. Specialists assigned the tumor a Gleason score of 9, the highest grade on the scale, but noted that it remains hormone-sensitive—an important factor that leaves several treatment options on the table.

The news arrived in a statement from Biden’s office on Sunday, a week after increasing rumors about his health. A short time later the former president posted a selfie and message on X, thanking supporters for their “love and support” and adding, “Jill and I have learned we are strongest in the broken places.” It was his first public comment since the diagnosis became public.

Messages of sympathy poured in from across the political aisle. Donald Trump used Truth Social to wish Biden a “fast and successful recovery,” while Vice President-turned-ally Kamala Harris praised her old boss as a lifelong fighter. Other well-known figures—including Representative Ro Khanna, Meghan McCain, and even frequent critic Marjorie Taylor Greene—shared personal reflections on cancer and offered prayers for the Biden family.

Biden’s personal history with the disease runs deep. After losing his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015, he launched the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative to speed research and improve patient care. Even after leaving office earlier this year, he remained an outspoken champion of cancer-related legislation and funding—work he vows to continue as a patient himself.

Prostate cancer is among the most common malignancies in older men, and outcomes vary widely depending on how early the disease is caught and how far it has progressed. Biden’s medical team is now evaluating a treatment plan, and further updates are expected in the coming days.
