Melania Trump has consistently prioritized the well-being and future of her son, Barron, above all else. While her role as First Lady showcased her public presence, her focus has always remained firmly on her family. As her husband potentially eyes a return to the White House, Melania appears unlikely to fully embrace the traditional duties of the First Lady role, choosing instead to devote time to her son.
Now 18, Barron Trump has embarked on his academic journey at New York University’s Stern School of Business. Fellow students have remarked on the unique experience of sharing a campus with the President’s son, who is accompanied by Secret Service agents at all times to ensure his security.
Melania Trump has fiercely shielded her son, Barron, from media attention throughout his life, and that hasn’t changed as he’s grown older. Recently, a Republican politician shed light on the close bond between Melania and Barron, emphasizing the lengths she is willing to go to protect him from harm.
With Donald Trump set to be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States in a few days, Melania is preparing to return to the White House. As Trump takes up his second term in the Oval Office, the family will once again call 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue home.
When Donald Trump left the White House in 2020, Melania appeared ready to step away from politics for good. She, her husband, and their son Barron relocated to their Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, where Barron attended Oxbridge Academy high school.
After their move, Melania and Barron retreated from public view, making only rare appearances over the years. She worked tirelessly to shield her son from media attention, particularly amid widespread reporting on Donald Trump’s legal troubles. In March 2023, a source told People magazine that Melania has always been “deeply protective” of her only child.
“Melania’s closest relationships are with her family. She’s a devoted mother to Barron and has always been fiercely protective of him,” a source shared, emphasizing that Barron has always been her “top priority.”
As Donald Trump prepares for his presidency, reports suggest that Melania plans to spend most of her time in New York rather than Washington. Around the time Barron graduated high school in May, insights into their life at Mar-a-Lago emerged. According to a source cited by the Daily Mail, Melania has kept herself in a tightly controlled bubble behind the gates of the Trump family’s Palm Beach estate.
“He’s so regal—he’s like a little Melania,” a source close to the Trump family told the Daily Mail when describing Barron Trump.
Since Donald Trump’s presidential victory in November, Melania has made only one public appearance, leaving many speculating about her role in the upcoming administration. While some insiders believe she will fulfill the traditional duties of a First Lady, reports indicate she will not live at the White House full-time. Sources told CNN that Melania plans to reside primarily at Trump Tower in New York to stay close to Barron, while also spending time at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.
“She has carte blanche—she can be as active in the East Wing or as inactive as she wants,” said Kate Bennett, author of Free, Melania, in an interview with CNN.
Bennett noted that unlike previous First Ladies such as Laura Bush and Michelle Obama, Melania has not used the last four years to build her own platform or establish a lasting agenda. “While most First Ladies continue to advance their causes after their White House tenure, Melania has chosen a quieter path. It’s a missed opportunity for someone with her level of global recognition,” Bennett explained.
CNN also reported that discussions about Melania’s role in the new administration remain ongoing. She has already appointed Hayley Harrison as her Chief of Staff. In an interview with Fox News in October, Melania hinted that her approach to a second term in the White House would be “different.”
“I’m not anxious because this time is different. I have much more experience and knowledge now,” Melania Trump explained, reflecting on her return to the White House. “I was there before. When you go in, you know exactly what to expect.”
Meanwhile, Barron Trump has settled into his first months at New York University, where his transition appears to have gone smoothly. The 18-year-old continues to benefit from Secret Service protection, a security measure that remains in place on campus.
Unlike his time in the White House during Donald Trump’s first term, Barron will not be living there during his father’s second presidency. Instead, he will stay at Trump Tower in New York while pursuing his studies. However, whether Melania will reside with him full-time remains uncertain.
Sources close to the family told People magazine that Melania is committed to supporting Barron’s well-being and academic success. While other students enjoy the traditional dorm experience, Barron will not follow that path. “Living in a dorm in a college town isn’t part of his plans right now,” a source explained. “Barron already has his own political ideas, and his environment needs to be carefully monitored.”
Another source noted that staying at home is the best option for him at this stage. “Whether or not others think he’s ready to live independently, Melania believes it’s better to be close to him. She wants to be there as much as possible, and I expect that to continue,” the source shared.
Melania’s decision to stay close to Barron goes beyond his adjustment to college life. Insiders revealed to People that Donald Trump’s return to the White House has also influenced her choice, ensuring that Barron receives the support he needs amid the family’s high-profile political life.
“Melania worries deeply about the hatred in the country and how it impacts her son, who is entirely innocent in all of this,” a source shared. “She has always been a supportive sounding board for him. They talk openly about life in the spotlight and how to navigate it. She does everything she can to normalize his life—if that’s even possible.”
Melania is also focused on fostering a sense of normalcy for Barron during his time at New York University. “She wants to encourage him to make friends,” a Palm Beach insider said. “She’s mindful of the dangers, especially the hate that can surface on college campuses, and works to keep him mentally healthy by maintaining open communication with him and their immediate family.”
Despite Melania’s efforts, Barron’s presence at NYU has drawn attention. Paparazzi captured him on his first day, and students have shared mixed feelings about attending school alongside him. In interviews with the Daily Mail, one student speculated that Barron might adjust his outlook to fit in, while another joked, “My mom would want me to marry him.” Others expressed sympathy, with one student noting, “I feel bad for him—he didn’t choose this life.”
Through it all, Melania remains fiercely protective of her son. According to sources, she is “prepared to chop off anyone at the knees” who tries to harm or target Barron. Secret Service agents accompany him everywhere, ensuring his safety as he adjusts to life on campus.
A fourth NYU student shared a neutral perspective on Barron Trump, saying, “His dad is his dad, and he is his own person, so I’m not going to judge.” She added that she would consider a friendship with him, noting, “Of course, who wouldn’t want to be friends with a Trump?”
Not everyone on campus, however, shares that sentiment. Another student expressed frustration, stating she would “absolutely not” be friends with Barron. “It speaks to the privilege that a lot of the NYU kids have. I’m only here because of financial aid,” she told the Daily Mail.
The media’s fascination with the children of high-profile figures is nothing new, and Barron is no exception. Robert Paulson, former Republican mayor of Solon, addressed the challenges celebrity children face in a Cleveland.com column. Paulson noted that while Donald Trump’s older children—Don Jr., Eric, and Ivanka—were scrutinized for their roles in their father’s administration, Barron was shielded by Melania.
“Melania was prepared to chop off anyone at the knees who went after her then 8-year-old son, Barron,” Paulson wrote, adding that Barron was rarely seen in public during his younger years. Now, as a towering 6’9” 18-year-old attending NYU, keeping him out of the spotlight may prove far more difficult.
While Barron has remained a largely private figure, glimpses of his life have revealed subtle changes over the years. As a child, he spoke with a Slovenian accent, influenced by his mother. Today, however, his accent has shifted entirely, reflecting his growth and immersion into American life.
In a recent video, Barron Trump made a rare public appearance alongside his father, Donald Trump, as they met UFC President Dana White. For many, it was the first time hearing Barron speak in years—and it came as a surprise. His once-distinct Slovenian accent had completely disappeared.
“Hello. How are you? Very nice to meet you,” Barron said in the clip, which was shared on X (formerly Twitter) and quickly went viral. Fans flocked to the video, commenting on Barron’s voice and demeanor.
“First time I’ve ever heard Barron talk,” one user wrote, according to the NY Post. “Barron has his dad’s speech cadence!” a second comment read. Another user remarked, “Sounds like Timothée Chalamet,” while a fourth praised Barron’s polite interaction with White, calling him “such a gentleman.”
As Barron steps into the public eye more frequently, many are curious about his future and how his upbringing will shape his role in the family’s legacy.
