“I Love You Dad”: The Heartbreaking Final Words From Michael Madsen’s Son Before His Tragic Death at 26

In the glittering world of Hollywood, where Michael Madsen built his reputation playing tough guys in iconic films like “Reservoir Dogs” and “Kill Bill,” nothing could have prepared him for the devastating blow that would shatter his world in January 2022.
The Last Message
“I love you dad.” Three simple words. A text message that seemed routine at the time, but would soon become the most precious and painful memory the 64-year-old actor would carry for the rest of his life.
Just days after receiving this message from his eldest son Hudson, Michael Madsen’s world came crashing down. On January 23, 2022, Hudson Lee Madsen, a 26-year-old U.S. Army Sergeant stationed in Oahu, Hawaii, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in what authorities ruled a suicide.
A Soldier’s Silent Struggle
Hudson Madsen appeared to have everything going for him. He had recently completed his first tour of duty with the U.S. Army, which included deployment to Afghanistan. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, living with his wife Carlie, whom he married in 2017. To the outside world, he seemed happy, optimistic about the future, and deeply in love.
“I am in shock as my son, whom I just spoke with a few days ago, said he was happy,” Michael Madsen told the Los Angeles Times in a heartbreaking statement days after Hudson’s death. “My last text from him was ‘I love you dad.’ I didn’t see any signs of depression. It’s so tragic and sad. I’m just trying to make sense of everything and understand what happened.”
The Hollywood star, known for his collaborations with director Quentin Tarantino—who was also Hudson’s godfather—revealed that his son had typical financial challenges but was looking forward to building a family and his future. “He had typical life challenges that people have with finances, but he wanted a family. He was looking towards his future, so it’s mind-blowing. I just can’t grasp what happened,” Madsen shared.
Hidden Pain Behind a Happy Facade
What makes Hudson’s death even more heartbreaking is how well he concealed his inner turmoil. Just one week before his death, his wife Carlie had undergone surgery to remove a breast tumor. In an Instagram post, she praised Hudson’s unwavering support during her recovery: “Yesterday I had surgery to remove a tumor from one of my breasts and he was and has been so patient throughout this whole process. We were at the hospital for about 7 hours yesterday and while I was in surgery he went to target and got me flowers, comfy pajamas, my favorite candy and a card! He’s also been amazing in helping with my recovery and I’m just so thankful.”
Two weeks later, tragedy struck. Carlie would later post the devastating message: “I miss you so much.”
A Father’s Fight for Answers
Michael Madsen revealed to the Los Angeles Times that beneath his son’s seemingly happy exterior, Hudson had been struggling with mental health issues. The actor disclosed that Hudson had been seeking therapy but stopped getting help because he believed military officers and other soldiers were shaming him for needing mental health support.
“Officers and rank and file were shaming” Hudson for needing therapy, Madsen alleged, claiming this stigma led his son to stop seeking the help he desperately needed. The grieving father requested a full military investigation into the circumstances surrounding his son’s death—an investigation that remains unavailable to the public.
The Unimaginable Aftermath
The Department of the Medical Examiner in Honolulu confirmed that Hudson died from a gunshot wound to the head, with the manner of death listed as suicide. An autopsy was completed, though the full report would take several months to become available to the public.
The Madsen family released a statement expressing their overwhelming grief: “We are heartbroken and overwhelmed with grief and pain at the loss of Hudson. His memory and light will be remembered by all who knew and loved him. We ask for privacy and respect during this difficult time.”
Hudson was the oldest of Michael’s three sons with his wife DeAnna Madsen, whom he married in 1996. The couple also shares sons Calvin and Luke. Michael has two additional sons, Christian and Max, from his previous marriage to Jeannine Bisignano.
A Widow’s Heartbreak
On January 23, 2023, marking one year since Hudson’s death, his widow Carlie wrote a gut-wrenching tribute on Instagram: “I don’t even know how it’s been a year without you. It still hurts just as much as it did that day. You’re the first thing I think about everyday when I wake up and the last thing I think about before I fall asleep at night. I can’t even describe how much I’m hurting and how much I miss you. I just wish you would have talked to me and told me what was going on that day. I’m so sorry you thought this was the only way to make things better. I’m so sorry I couldn’t do more and I didn’t see the signs. I’m sorry I let you down. Just know you’re always with me and always on my mind. I miss you so much and I love you more Lump.”
The Ripple Effect of Tragedy
The loss of Hudson cast a long shadow over Michael Madsen’s life. In September 2024, after nearly three decades of marriage, the actor filed for divorce from DeAnna, citing irreconcilable differences. In the divorce filing, Madsen made shocking allegations, claiming that the couple’s official separation date was in January 2022—right after Hudson’s death.
“I have been separated from Respondent since my son’s death by suicide on 1/25/22,” Michael wrote in his statement. “I believe Respondent drove him to this by her neglect, drinking and alcoholism.”
Tragically, Michael Madsen himself passed away on July 3, 2025, at age 67 from cardiac arrest. Heart disease and alcoholism were listed as contributing factors. The beloved actor, who appeared in over 300 films during his decades-long career, never fully recovered from the loss of his eldest son.
Breaking the Silence on Military Mental Health
Hudson Madsen’s story highlights a critical issue facing military service members: the stigma surrounding mental health care in the armed forces. Despite appearing strong, happy, and supportive to those around him, Hudson was fighting an invisible battle that ultimately claimed his life.
His father’s allegations about military shaming and the toxic culture around seeking mental health support underscore a systemic problem that continues to affect veterans and active-duty service members. Hudson completed his deployment to Afghanistan and returned home, but the challenges he faced—whether financial stress, mental health struggles from his deployment, or the pressures of military culture—became insurmountable in silence.
A Legacy of Love and Loss
Hudson Lee Madsen was born on May 20, 1995. In his 26 years, he served his country with honor, built a life with the woman he loved, and maintained a close relationship with his father and family. To those who knew him, he was a source of light, support, and love.
His death serves as a powerful reminder that mental health struggles don’t always show obvious warning signs. Someone can text “I love you dad,” can buy flowers and candy for their recovering wife, can seem happy and talk about their future—and still be in crisis.
Michael Madsen’s final public words about his son encapsulate the confusion and heartbreak felt by so many who lose loved ones to suicide: “My beautiful son, the light of my life, has decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. Let him rest in peace and let no one follow his example. My baby, I love you so much. Be at peace.”
