What a Filmmaker Saw Deep in West Virginia Still Haunts Him Years Later

When photographer Mark Laita drove down a dirt path in rural West Virginia to meet the Whittaker family, he expected a challenging portrait session. What he encountered instead was an overwhelming reality that would spark millions of views and eventually trigger state intervention.

Years after first documenting the family in Odd, West Virginia, Laita revealed that the visceral details of his initial visit still linger.

A Encapsulated History in the Hills
The Whittakers gained widespread public attention after Laita featured them on his YouTube channel, Soft White Underbelly. The family’s complex genetic history dates back over a century, beginning when the children of identical twin brothers Henry and John Whittaker married one another.

Over generations, this close endogamy led to severe physical and vocal disabilities among several family members.

During his first trip, Laita required local guidance and police accompaniment due to protective neighbors guarding the isolated hollow. Speaking on the Koncrete Klips podcast, Laita recalled the intense atmosphere upon arrival. He described family members communicating through vocalizations rather than words and reacting unexpectedly to visitors.

“It was out of control,” Laita noted, calling it one of the most intense encounters of his career.

From Viral Attention to State Intervention
Over two decades of intermittent filming, millions of viewers watched the family go to the state fair, celebrate holidays, and navigate daily life. However, intense global scrutiny eventually drew the attention of local authorities.

According to reporting from the Daily Mail, state officials from West Virginia Adult Protective Services intervened at the property. Authorities quietly removed 72-year-old Ray Whittaker, his 79-year-old sister Lorene, and her 46-year-old son Timmy from the home.

The sudden removal left remaining siblings Betty, 73, and Larry, 69, searching for answers.

“They said they were helping them, and they couldn’t live here no more,” Betty told reporters. “I miss them a lot. I raised them.”

Larry expressed frustration over the lack of updates from state authorities, noting that he has been waiting by the phone without word on where his siblings were taken. Officials with the West Virginia Department of Human Services stated they were aware of the situation but could not release details due to strict state confidentiality laws.

What We Know
Documented Lineage: The Whittaker family tree folded inward a century ago through marriages between offspring of twin brothers.

Viral Exposure: Photographer Mark Laita documented the family’s daily life on his channel Soft White Underbelly, generating tens of millions of views.

Protective Removal: Adult Protective Services removed Ray, Lorene, and Timmy Whittaker from the home in Odd, West Virginia.

State Silence: West Virginia human services officials cited privacy laws in declining to disclose the current location or welfare status of the removed family members.

Why This Matters
This situation highlights a growing dilemma in modern media: the boundary between documentary awareness and public exploitation. While viral platforms can bring financial support and visibility to forgotten rural communities, sudden internet fame often invites intense government oversight and intrusive tourism.

For millions of U.S. families caring for aging or disabled relatives in impoverished areas, the story touches on deep fears surrounding state intervention, personal privacy, and the delicate balance of familial caregiving.

As remaining family members wait in West Virginia, the story remains a stark reminder of how digital exposure can permanently reshape real-world lives.
