He Was on a Lunch Date When Shots Rang Out—Then Three Words Changed Everything

What started as a routine weekend lunch date turned into an active battleground in seconds. When a rifle-wielding gunman opened fire on innocent diners, one ordinary citizen didn’t run. He drew his own firearm and stepped directly into danger.

Jordan Salinas, 35, was grabbing lunch with his girlfriend before a planned horseback riding trip in Twin Falls, Idaho. Suddenly, rapid gunfire shattered the afternoon quiet at the busy In-N-Out Burger. Fleeing families sprinted past him.

Salinas didn’t panic. A full-time caregiver for his brother, who uses a wheelchair, Salinas had spent years training for this exact nightmare. He drew his concealed pistol and moved toward the pops of gunfire.

Bullets Start Flying Both Ways
Standing by the drive-thru window, 24-year-old Chad Williams was raising a rifle and shooting directly into occupied cars. Salinas raised his pistol with both hands and engaged the attacker. At the exact same time, an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper who was eating nearby also drew his weapon.

Together, the two men unleashed return fire. The sudden wall of lead caught the shooter off guard.

“He did not like it when bullets started firing both ways,” Salinas later recalled.

Eyewitnesses described the gunman instantly growing panicked as shots snapped around him. Trapped drivers used those precious seconds to slam on the gas and escape the killing zone. Distracted and forced backward into a nearby parking lot, Williams turned the gun on himself as police closed in.

Official Praise: Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks praised the men for preventing further loss of life, calling their intervention heroic.

Why This Matters
Every community in America wrestles with the terrifying reality of mass public shootings. When active shooters strike crowded public places, seconds mean the difference between life and death.

This tragic event highlights the profound impact of trained, vigilant citizens acting alongside law enforcement. Salinas started rigorous firearm training back in 2021 after a mass shooting at a Boise mall. He realized that vulnerable people—like his disabled brother—are often target zero. His preparation turned a potential massacre into a story of heroism and survival.

As Twin Falls County Sheriff Jack Johnson stated, “These people are true heroes in our community, and their actions diverted the shooter and no doubt saved many lives.”
