The Secret Reason ’60s Icon Twiggy Got Her Famous Haircut—And How She Looks at 76

In 1966, a timid 16-year-old schoolgirl walked into a posh London salon expecting a simple wash and set. Hours later, she emerged with a haircut that altered pop culture forever—a transformation she never actually wanted.

Today, Dame Lesley Lawson—universally known as Twiggy—is 76 years old. She remains one of history’s most recognizable faces. Yet, the story behind her legendary launch relies on a moment of pure teenage hesitation.

A Seven-Hour Ordeal in Mayfair
Standing just 5-foot-6, young Lesley Hornby was repeatedly told she lacked the height for modeling. Seeking a stylish update, she visited the House of Leonard in Mayfair.

Celebrity hair stylist Leonard Lewis saw the teenager and immediately envisioned a radical experiment. He wanted a model to test his new short crop.

“I’d been growing my hair,” Twiggy recalled during an interview on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast. “For a moment I kind of went, ‘I don’t know whether I want my hair cut.’ But I was in this very posh salon in Mayfair, so I was a bit too shy to say I don’t want it done.”

Instead of speaking up, the quiet grammar school student simply nodded.

She returned the following day for a grueling process. Stylists spent seven full hours cutting, coloring, and re-cutting her hair into a featherlight golden crop. Photographer Barry Lategan snapped test photos, which Lewis hung on the salon wall.

Days later, Daily Express fashion editor Deirdre McSharry spotted the photo while getting her own hair done. The newspaper published the image under a sweeping headline: “Twiggy—The Face of ’66.”

From Mod Pioneer to Hollywood Star
Within weeks, the waifish teen with dramatic, hand-painted lower eyelashes graced the cover of Vogue. Mattel soon created a Twiggy Barbie doll. Her image came to define the Swinging Sixties alongside designer Mary Quant.

Yet, Twiggy walked away from full-time modeling after just four years. She pivoted directly into acting and singing.

Her screen debut in the 1971 musical The Boy Friend earned her two Golden Globe Awards. She later earned a Tony nomination on Broadway, served as a judge on America’s Next Top Model, and released multiple vocal albums.

In 2019, King Charles III officially appointed her a Dame Commander for her contributions to fashion and charity.

What We Know
The Breakthrough: Twiggy was named “The Face of ’66” at age 16 after an unwanted seven-hour salon appointment.

The Look: Her gamine pixie cut and exaggerated lower lashes challenged traditional 1950s beauty standards.

The Pivot: She retired from full-time modeling in 1970 to pursue award-winning acting and music careers.

The Honors: She became Dame Lesley Lawson in 2019 and currently hosts the Tea with Twiggy podcast.

The Present: At 76, she recently starred in Burberry’s Spring/Summer 2026 campaign and routinely attends high-profile global fashion events.

Why This Matters
Twiggy’s rise reflects a universal dilemma that resonates deeply across generations: how young people navigate external expectations while searching for their own voice.

Her story challenges modern beauty standards that often prioritize rigid conformity over individuality. In an age dominated by artificial perfection and social media pressure, Twiggy’s trajectory proves that true influence often stems from unexpected moments of vulnerability.

Furthermore, her continuous presence in high fashion at age 76 marks a refreshing shift toward celebrating age, grace, and lifelong personal evolution.

“My number one is family,” Twiggy stated when reflecting on her legacy, emphasizing that no career achievement ever outranked her commitment as a mother and grandmother.

Decades after a quiet moment of intimidation changed her destiny, Twiggy continues to demonstrate that a single moment never defines the entire story.
