Wheel of Fortune Contestant Misses 100K Over Phrase Fans Claim Nobody Ever Says

A Wheel of Fortune contestant played a nearly flawless game, only to watch a six-figure grand prize slip away over four words that left fans furious.

Contestant Cesar Redaja dominated regular play, building up an impressive $26,393 in cash and prizes. His strong performance earned him a trip to the high-stakes bonus round, where an extra $100,000 hung in the balance.

Selecting the “Phrase” category, Redaja called out his chosen letters: H, G, M, and A. Combined with the standard provided letters (R, S, T, L, N, E), the board lit up to display: “THAT _AS A ____TAL _A_T_R”.

A Race Against the Clock
With ten seconds on the clock, Redaja began racking his brain. “That was a… uh…” he stammered, attempting to piece together the remaining letters as time rapidly expired.

The buzzer sounded before he could complete a full guess. Host Ryan Seacrest revealed the correct solution: “That was a pivotal factor.”

Seacrest then opened the bonus envelope, revealing Redaja had missed out on the $100,000 cash prize.

Viewers Direct Fury at Show Writers
While Redaja took the loss in stride, fans watching at home immediately erupted online, according to VT.co. Viewers argued that “That was a pivotal factor” barely qualifies as a recognizable phrase in normal daily conversation.

“‘That was a pivotal factor’ no one says that,” one fan posted on social media.

Another viewer sarcastically added, “Yeah, I’m always going around saying ‘That was a pivotal factor!’. It’s so common! How could he not get that?!”

Other fans joked about the awkward phrasing, arguing game show writers picked an overly formal sentence structure rather than a common expression.

A Pattern of Heartbreak
This is not the first time Wheel of Fortune fans have rallied behind a contestant after a controversial bonus round.

During Ryan Seacrest’s second week as host, contestant Vivian Tran missed out on a historic $1,000,000 envelope under similar high-pressure conditions. Playing in the “What Are You Doing?” category, Tran struggled to solve “_ _ _ E R I N G, S _ M E, HELP”. The correct answer was “Offering some help.”

In another widely shared clip from an earlier season, contestant Megan missed out on $40,000 after judges ruled she did not clearly pronounce “Pink Orchid” before time expired.

Why This Matters
For millions of Americans, game shows like Wheel of Fortune represent a fair shot at life-changing money through quick thinking and skill. When a puzzle feels unreasonably obscure or disconnected from everyday speech, viewers feel the game loses its integrity. Outrage spreads quickly because fans place themselves in the contestant’s shoes, feeling the shared frustration of watching hard work undone by an awkward set of words.

Redaja walked away with more than $26,000, but for viewers at home, the real story remains whether game show producers are making their final puzzles nearly impossible to win.
