Doctors fought for an hour to save a baby born with no heartbeat

The most harrowing hour of Demi and Charlie’s lives began the moment their son, Luca, was delivered. After noticing a lack of movement in the womb, the young parents were rushed into an emergency C-section. When Luca arrived, he was silent. He had no heartbeat.

For the medical team in the delivery room, there was no time to waste. While most births are defined by the sound of a first cry, Luca’s arrival was met with a desperate, hour-long fight to force his heart to beat.

“The Longest Hour”

Luca had been diagnosed at three months gestation with gastroschisis, a rare condition where a hole in the abdominal wall allows the bowel to develop outside the body. While the parents had been prepared for a complex journey, nothing could have steeled them for the sight of their son being born without life signs.

“Seeing him born dead was so hard,” his father, Charlie, told reporters. “It took the doctors around an hour to work on him. It’s the longest hour I’ve ever been through.”

Despite the odds, the relentless efforts of the medical staff eventually succeeded. Luca’s heart began to beat, marking the beginning of a grueling fight for survival.

From Crisis to Connection

The ordeal didn’t end in the delivery room. Luca was immediately transferred to The Royal London Hospital for specialist care. His mother, Demi, was still recovering from her own major surgery but refused to stay behind. Ignoring medical advice to rest for 24 hours, she discharged herself only eight hours later, driven by one goal: to be by her son’s side.

Luca underwent three separate surgeries to repair the damage caused by the gastroschisis and stabilize his condition. For weeks, the parents could only look on, unable to hold their child while he remained connected to life-support machines.

The turning point finally came when doctors successfully removed Luca from the ventilator. For the first time, Demi and Charlie were able to hold their son, performing skin-to-skin contact—a moment that brought the family their first true sense of peace since the birth.

What We Know

Diagnosis: Luca was born with gastroschisis, affecting approximately one in every 2,000 babies.

The Crisis: Following a lack of fetal movement, an emergency C-section was performed.

Resuscitation: Medical staff worked for roughly 60 minutes to restore Luca’s heartbeat.

Recovery: After three corrective surgeries and weeks of critical care, Luca is now stable and breathing without a ventilator.

Why This Matters

Luca’s survival serves as a powerful reminder of the intersection between cutting-edge medical intervention and human resilience. In an era where medical technology often dominates the headlines, this story brings the focus back to the fundamental “right to care.”

His journey highlights the reality that even in the most dire outcomes—where life appears to have slipped away—the dedication of medical professionals and the tenacity of the human spirit can occasionally rewrite the ending. It is a story that echoes across hospitals everywhere, offering a glimmer of hope to any family facing the unthinkable.

“Me and Demi got to hold him the other day,” Charlie said. “It was quite literally like holding my world in my hands. I’ll never forget that moment.”
