A Soccer Star’s Three-Day Search Ends in Heartbreak Following Venezuela’s Deadly Twin Earthquakes

For three agonizing days, professional footballer Lucas Trejo did what no father should ever have to do: he tore through the wreckage of his own home with his bare hands, praying for a miracle that would never come.

Trejo, an Argentine athlete playing for the Venezuelan side Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, was at a team training camp in Caracas when the ground began to move. Last Wednesday, Venezuela was struck by a rare seismic event known as a “doublet”—two massive earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, that hit just 39 seconds apart.

While Trejo rushed back to the coastal city of La Guaira, he arrived to find his neighborhood transformed into a graveyard. His wife, Yanina, and their two young children, Aaron and Ainhoa, had been inside their apartment when the structure collapsed.

A City Reduced to Rubble
Trejo’s brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, described the scene as one of complete devastation. “He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been,” Ardiles told reporters. For 72 hours, as the death toll from the disaster climbed past 1,700, Trejo pleaded for heavy machinery and rescue support, hoping against all odds that his family had survived the initial tremors.

On Sunday, the search came to a tragic end when rescue teams recovered the bodies of Yanina, Aaron, and Ainhoa from the debris.

What We Know
The Disaster: Twin earthquakes (7.2 and 7.5 magnitude) struck Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

The Toll: Official reports indicate at least 1,719 people have died, with tens of thousands remaining missing or unaccounted for.

The Impact: The town of La Guaira was among the hardest-hit regions, with entire apartment complexes reduced to mounds of concrete.

The Recovery: While international teams, including the U.S. Virginia Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, have successfully pulled survivors from the rubble, the scale of the destruction has severely hampered rescue efforts.

A Community in Mourning
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Venezuelan football community, which is already reeling from the loss of other young players and family members. Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira issued a gut-wrenching statement to their player: “Lucas, you are not alone. Your family at Maritime La Guaira is with you.”

The nightmare facing Trejo is a reflection of the chaos currently gripping the country. With tens of thousands still missing, reports suggest that state-led rescue efforts are struggling to keep pace, leaving many families like Trejo’s to rely on frantic personal searches and the help of neighbors.

Why This Matters
Beyond the heartbreaking personal loss of a beloved family, this disaster highlights the extreme vulnerability of regions prone to such high-intensity, back-to-back seismic events. As international aid begins to arrive, the images of searchers digging through the remains of once-vibrant homes serve as a stark reminder of how quickly “normal life” can vanish. For thousands of families in Venezuela, the search for closure—or for a miracle—is far from over.

“You are not alone,” is the message the football community is sending today, but for Lucas Trejo, the silence left behind in the ruins of his home is a sound that will echo for a lifetime.
