She Got Cut in 7th Place. Now Fans Want Her Seat Permanently

She was voted off American Idol more than 20 years ago — in seventh place, no less. On Monday night, Jennifer Hudson returned to the very stage that sent her home, and sat down as a judge. By the time the credits rolled, fans across the country were demanding she never leave.
Hudson joined the Season 24 panel on April 20 for Disney Night, stepping in as both a mentor and guest judge alongside Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and current judge Carrie Underwood. She mentored the Top 9 contestants, then took a seat at the judging table to offer commentary and critiques after each performance. TV Insider The response was immediate — and it wasn’t quiet.

From 7th Place to EGOT: The Full Circle Moment
Hudson told ABC News that returning felt like a “dream come true,” adding: “I got to call myself a judge today. I don’t take anything lightly and I celebrate everything. It’s a celebration to be able to come back in my circle of life and be in the judging panel.” ABC News
That phrase — “circle of life” — hits differently when you know the backstory. Hudson famously delivered one of the most memorable performances of her original season with “Circle of Life” from The Lion King. Gold Derby Coming back to mentor a contestant who sang that very same song, then sitting in the judge’s chair, was a moment decades in the making.
While Hudson didn’t win American Idol in 2004, she went on to become an Emmy-nominated talk show host, Oscar winner, and achieved EGOT status in 2022 when she won a Tony Award for producing the Broadway show A Strange Loop. ABC News

The Judging That Stopped the Internet
Hudson didn’t just show up — she showed out. During Disney Night, her feedback to contestants was sharp, warm, and deeply rooted in lived experience. To one contestant she said, “The doors of the church are now open. You ministered, you owned it, and I felt it.” To another: “You owned the stage. I felt like I was at your concert.” Gold Derby
To a third, she offered a note that only someone who’s actually competed could deliver: “You’re a joy to watch, you have an amazing voice — but don’t lose the song. This is a singing competition first.” Gold Derby
Fans watching at home noticed. Social media lit up within minutes.

“Can We Swap Carrie?”
One viewer posted on X: “Jennifer Hudson would’ve been a better judge than Carrie Underwood is.” Another wrote: “Can we swap Carrie for Jennifer Hudson permanently, thanks #AmericanIdol.” TV Insider
A third fan made the case more bluntly: “Jennifer immediately being 100000% better and more likable than Carrie.” Southernminn.com
The pile-on was swift enough that Underwood’s name trended alongside Hudson’s — not a comparison the second-season judge likely wanted.
This is Underwood’s second year on the panel, having stepped in when Katy Perry departed in 2024 after seven seasons. TV Insider She hasn’t publicly responded to the fan criticism.

What We Know
Hudson competed on American Idol Season 3, finishing in 7th place in one of the show’s most shocking early eliminations. TV Insider
She earned her EGOT in stages: a Grammy in 2009, an Oscar in 2007, an Emmy in 2021, and a Tony in 2022. ABC News
She previously coached on the U.K. version of The Voice from 2017 to 2019, and on the U.S. version for two seasons. TV Insider
No announcement has been made by ABC or the show’s producers about a permanent judging change for Season 25.
The fan campaign exists entirely on social media — it is not an official petition or confirmed production discussion.

Why This Matters Beyond the Drama
This isn’t just a fan war over a reality TV seat. It’s a story about what audiences actually want from the people who judge talent: lived experience, emotional honesty, and the credibility of someone who’s been where the contestants are standing.
Hudson wasn’t handed her career. She was told, in front of millions of viewers, that she wasn’t good enough — and then she went out and won everything. When she tells a 22-year-old on a Disney stage to not lose the song, she’s not reading from a playbook. She knows what it costs.
Whether ABC listens to the fans or not, one thing is certain: Hudson said it felt like the moment “transported her back” — and for a lot of viewers Monday night, it transported them right along with her.
