My Best Friend of 20 Years Blocked Me on Christmas Eve Over Rumors I Never Started

I can’t believe I’m writing this, but I need to get it out. My name is Jennifer, and I’m 34 years old. For two decades, I had someone I thought was my ride-or-die—my best friend Marcus. We met in high school, survived college together, celebrated career wins, and supported each other through breakups and family losses. Or at least, that’s what I thought.
This past Christmas, everything shattered. I’d been planning our annual Christmas Eve tradition for months—wine, movies, old photos. Marcus suddenly went silent. Texts unanswered. Calls sent to voicemail. By December 23rd, I discovered he’d blocked me on social media without explanation.
Confused and hurt, I reached out through a mutual friend, asking what I’d done. The response made my stomach drop. According to Marcus, I’d been spreading rumors about him at work—rumors I never made. He said I’d been “fake” our entire friendship and that he’d finally seen through me.
But here’s the thing: I hadn’t worked at the same place as Marcus in five years. Someone had used MY name to damage his professional reputation. When I confronted him with proof, his response wasn’t an apology—it was silence. He’d made his decision based on a lie, and the friendship I’d cherished was gone.
