Genius Shower Drain Hack: All You Need Is a Balloon

The Balloon Method That Keeps Cockroaches Out of Your Shower
Nobody wants cockroaches invading their bathroom, least of all crawling up through the shower drain. These uninvited intruders love warm, humid environments, and your bathroom checks every box. Fortunately, there’s an incredibly easy way to stop them using something you probably already have lying around: a simple balloon.
Cockroaches are attracted to bathrooms because they offer the ideal conditions—plenty of moisture, consistent warmth, and dark hiding places. Drains become convenient entry points, particularly when there’s food debris or pooled water nearby. While regular cleaning and managing humidity levels are essential for keeping infestations at bay, sometimes you need an extra layer of defense.
Here’s how to use a balloon to block cockroaches from emerging through your shower drain:
Remove the Drain Cover: Start by unscrewing or lifting off your shower drain cover so you can access the opening.
Prep Your Balloon: Take an ordinary party balloon and snip off both the top and bottom ends, turning it into a stretchy tube.
Secure It Over the Drain: Slide the balloon over the drain cover and fit it snugly in place. Water will still flow freely through it, but the tight rubber creates a barrier that cockroaches can’t squeeze past.
Swap It Out Regularly: For best results, replace the balloon every so often to maintain its effectiveness.
This ingenious solution works by creating a narrow enough passage for water to escape while physically blocking roaches from making their way up.
But don’t stop there. Inspect the areas around your pipes and vents for any cracks or gaps where pests might slip through. Keep surfaces dry, wipe down counters and floors frequently, and make it a habit to keep the toilet lid closed. Consistency and attention to detail are your strongest weapons in the fight against these persistent pests.
