Authorities in New Orleans say a 12-year-old boy, Bryan Vasquez, lost his life after being attacked by an alligator near his family’s home. His mother, Hilda Vasquez, has since been arrested and charged with negligent homicide and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.
Bryan disappeared on August 14, sparking an intense two-week search by police, volunteers, and relatives. On August 26, his body was found in a nearby lagoon. Investigators confirmed he had been mauled by an alligator and drowned.
Authorities allege the alligator entered through a window of the Vasquez home and attacked the child, who was autistic. During the search, Hilda had told reporters, “I want my child. He is my life.” But officers later revealed that Bryan had tried to run away from home on at least two occasions earlier that month. They questioned why the mother had left a bedroom window open after these incidents or failed to install alarms or security measures to prevent him from escaping.
Speaking to local outlet nola.com before her arrest, Hilda admitted: “He just wants to run.” Investigators say those comments raised further suspicions about her role in the tragedy.
For nearly two weeks, volunteers gathered daily at dawn to comb the Village De L’Est neighborhood, where the family lived. They searched on foot and with all-terrain vehicles, distributing missing-person flyers in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Hilda herself coordinated efforts from a makeshift search hub outside her home—until the devastating discovery was made.
The heartbreaking case comes just months after another tragedy involving a child’s preventable death. In February, two-year-old Salomao Rodrigues Faustino died in Neropolis, Brazil, after being left for hours in a parked car during sweltering heat. The boy’s nursery teacher, Flaviane Lima, reportedly forgot him inside the vehicle, where temperatures are believed to have soared to nearly 60°C. By the time firefighters reached the scene, Salomao could not be saved.
Authorities in Brazil later arrested Lima, who was charged with manslaughter and is currently being held at a detention facility in Aparecida de Goiania.
